Traditional Chinese Medicine

with Dr. Imke König

Slowing down is the key to a long, healthy, and happy life. The Turtle Spa Concept® combines the spa services of Schloss Elmau and the findings of modern sports science, nutritional science, phytotherapy, and aromatherapy with strategies and treatments from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Western medicine often only pays attention to disorders once organic changes have occurred. In contrast, TCM detects even the smallest signs of imbalance and takes various measures to correct them.

Our Medical Spa Director, Dr. Imke König, has been studying Chinese medicine for over 40 years and has worked full-time at Schloss Elmau since 2008. She discovered Taijiquan and Qigong through her martial arts practice in the 1980s. Charismatic teachers sparked her interest in Chinese medicine, Yang Sheng, five-element nutrition, and Daoism. She took her first acupuncture courses during her first semester of medical school.
She combines her in-depth knowledge of anatomy in movement, physiology, spiral dynamics, and self-defense with her inspiring  teaching style, in the Qigong group lessons, as well as Taijiquan and TCM workshops she gives  for guests at Schloss Elmau.

Her special field of interest lies in longevity research, based on the authentic Yang Sheng of the Chinese classics and modern longevity research. After an initial Chinese anamnesis (medical history), she works with her patients to find the right way to regain lasting health.

She offers acupuncture for all guests and indications in her private practice in the Schloss Elmau bathhouse.

Diagnose

TCM Initial Medical History and Diagnosis

In this initial diagnostic consultation, we develop a comprehensive picture of your state of health by not only identifying obvious symptoms, but also asking about all organs and vegetative functions (e.g. temperature, sweating, appetite, thirst, bowel movements, sleep, emotions, and much more). We use the tongue diagnosis, to assess the condition of your musculature (blood circulation, tension, water content) and digestion (quality and color of the tongue coating), as well as some other Chinese indications.

Pulse diagnosis gives us information about the condition of your heart, about muscle tension, vegetative tension (stress), the blood itself (anemia), and other vegetative functions such as pain..

Especially if you don't feel completely healthy without conventional (allopathic) medicine really being able to find a treatable cause, it is a sensible option to take a look at the whole picture.

Beratung

TCM Strategy Talk

In the Strategy Talk, we discuss Yang Sheng strategies on how you can improve your own health in addition to any TCM therapies such as acupuncture or herbal mixtures. Suitable measures can range from general and specific nutritional advice, to exercise sessions such as Qigong or Taijiquan, to meditation in motion, sleep hygiene, and biorhythms. Handling common stressors, such as phones, time pressure, or perfectionism, as well as the Chinese view of emotions, round off the spectrum of topics.

TCM Five Elements Nutritional Consulting

In Chinese medicine, there is no one diet that is perfect for everyone. In addition to general nutritional advice (eat slowly and chew very well, more cooked than raw, more warm than cold, etc.), there are certain foods that, based on their characteristics, are recommended depending on the symptoms (cold or heat, dampness with phlegm, dryness, organ weakness, e.g. weak heart, bladder or gastrointestinal tract). Foods are not only classified according to taste, but also according to their temperature effect on the body. And according to which bodily substances (qi or blood, yin or yang, moistening juices or drying phlegm, etc.) they influence. In the history of Chinese nutritional science, not only medicinal herbs but all available foods have been extensively tested, so that health problems can be specifically addressed with one’s daily diet.

Fun Fact: TCM's superfood are soups of all kinds, which may be eaten at any time of day or night.

Treatment

Tuina Anmo

The chirotherapy of TCM: comparable to massage and manual therapy in Western medicine. Tuina (tui = to push, na = to grasp) uses not only massage techniques and mobilization, but also cupping and guasha. Acupuncture points are activated by pressure instead of needling. The treatment can be very intensive and sometimes painful, but is always tailored to suit the individual constitution. Suitable for all indications in Chinese medicine.

Acupuncture

The form of Chinese medical therapy best known in the West. After an initial Chinese anamnesis, very fine needles are inserted into certain points (known as acupuncture points) and left in place for up to twenty minutes. An acupuncture session generally has a deeply relaxing effect and many patients fall asleep during the treatment. The main indications are pain syndromes, tension (stress), as well as vegetative issues such as digestive or sleep problems.

Qigong and Taijiquan

The active exercise aspect of TCM:

Qigong or “working with Qi” are essentially the physiotherapeutic or remedial gymnastic exercises of TCM. There are exercises for every aspect, i.e. flexibility, strength, coordination, balance, and also, if performed intensively enough, endurance.

Taijiquan translates roughly to “the highest form of unarmed combat” and is a synthesis of Qigong and the martial art of Gongfu. In a fixed sequence, all fighting techniques are practiced as if in slow motion with an imaginary opponent. This approach is highly effective for enhancing strength, flexibility, and balance and is also extremely meditative. Taijiquan is meditation in motion, performed to perfection.

Chinese Herbs / Medicinal Therapy

After an initial Chinese anamnesis, it is determined whether herbs are indicated and desired by the patient. Therapy with Chinese herbs and minerals corresponds to Western therapy with medication. This treatment accounts for the largest proportion of all TCM treatments worldwide. A special feature is that most prescriptions are put together individually for each patient and only very rarely are individual substances given. In Germany, we only use ingredients that have been checked for compliance with European standards, including species protection, and tested for heavy metals and toxic ingredients. TCM herbal treatments are administered as decoctions of raw herbs, powders, granules, tablets, or tinctures. For common indications, however, there are also more and more ready-to-use medicinal products in order to reduce the amount of work involved for patients.

Five Elements Nutrition (TCM Dietetics)

In contrast to Western dietetics, Chinese nutritional theory places great emphasis on the digestibility of food. Cooked meals that are eaten in peace and chewed thoroughly. In addition to digestibility, the specific temperature effect of the food is particularly important: foods with a high water content such as cucumber, tomato or melon cool the body and are therefore particularly suitable in summer and unsuitable for patients who constantly feel cold. Foods with a high fat and protein content, such as fatty meat, hard cheese and many hot spices such as chili, pepper, ginger or garlic are very warming and are perfect in winter, but unsuitable for patients who suffer from heat symptoms (a lot of sweating or stomach problems such as gastritis).

Power soups are the superfood of TCM. You can even eat them three times a day.
