We are proud that 80 of the 300 members of our young and enthusiastic team are apprentices and students who've graduated from high school and want to earn a vocational diploma as a Hotel Professional, or Cook, or an academic Bachelor or Masters' degree in Hotel Management. Non-EU applicants need a B1 or B2 certificate of German as a foreign language, and will receive an unlimited visa and permit to work in Germany after graduation.

Non-EU Professionals can get a contract, visa and work permit, if they have good German or English language skills, and a diploma or Bachelor degree, or at least three years of relevant work experience for the job.

Careers in the art of refining the elementary

Schloss Elmau offers a wide range of opportunities to deepen your knowledge and develop your talents in four different kitchens supplying a total of eight restaurants. Sergio Merolla is Executive Chef of the Summit Restaurant at the Retreat serving he best of Cucina Nuova Italiana. Sebastian and Benedikt Jakob are the Executive Chefs of the Cosmopolitan Restaurants at the Hideaway serving specialties from all over the world. Executive Chef Chris Rainer is in charge of the Luce d`Oro Restaurant, which has earned two Michelin stars, four red Gault Millau toques, and 9.5 pans in the Gusto restaurant guide. The Luce d`Oro is currently ranked as the best restaurant in Bavaria, among the top ten of the most innovative and #17 in the Hornstein Ranking of the best restaurants in Germany.

At Schloss Elmau, you will work with the finest products and also benefit from the experience of cooking with outstanding guest chefs from all over the world. You can complete your apprenticeship as a chef or a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Management with us. We will put you on the path to your first star. No matter if you are fresh out of school or already well-traveled: Your personality, motivation, and positive energy will make all the difference. German language skills are an advantage, but not necessary. English is sufficient.

Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management

High-school graduates (holders of the Abitur or International Baccalaureate) can also complete an academic bachelor’s degree (7 semesters) or master’s degree (4 semesters) in Hotel Management or Spa & Fitness Management at Schloss Elmau.  The work study program is conducted with the IST University of Applied Sciences for Management in Düsseldorf or the IU International University of Applied Sciences, both fully accredited all over Europe.

Apprenticeship Programs and Vocational Diplomas

You can join our vocational work study program to obtain a diploma as a hotel professional, restaurant manager or professional cook if you have graduated from high school and hold a certificate of level B1 or B2 German language skills. The 2–3-year apprenticeship involves working four days per week and attending classes one day a week at the vocational school in the nearby city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A three-year apprenticeship means working three days per week during the first year, and attending vocational school two days per week.

Internships, Summer/Seasonal Jobs

Deepen the theoretical knowledge you acquire during your studies with an internship. We maintain long-standing partnerships with leading hotel management schools in Germany and abroad. During vacation periods, we also like to hire students in the sports and education sciences for our edutainment and sports programs, as well as students of cultural studies to help organize our world-class concert and literary program. We also offer vacation jobs for students to work as wait-staff in one of our restaurants, or as spa attendants at one of our six luxury spas.

Wages & Benefits

  • Minimum wage is € 14/hour or € 2400/month.
  • Salary during the first and second year of apprenticeship is € 1100/month; from the 2nd year of apprenticeship €1200, in each case benefits include free meals at the staff restaurant and a flat fee for laundry
  • During a academic work study program, the salary is €1200/month for a four-day week and €900/month for a three-day weekand a flat fee for laundry
  • For staff/holiday studois in the towns of Klais (6km), Mittenwald (9km), Krün (9km) Wallgau (10km), and Garmisch (18km), rents start at € 300/month depending on the size of the apartment. The drive from Garmisch to Munich takes about 1 hour, to Innsbruck about 40 minutes.
  • Standard working hours are 8 hours/day, 5 days a week. Other models such as a 3 or 4-day work week and working hours between 4 hrs/day to 12 hrs/day are also an option, subject to agreement. 
  • Working hours are digitally recorded. Overtime is compensated with time off or paid out, in each case within 6 months at the latest
  • Vacation: 25 days from the 1st year of employment, 27 days from the 2nd year of employment, 30 days from the 4th year of employment
  • Free monthly tickets on the Bundesbahn for the routes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald to Klais
  • Free charging of e-cars in the staff parking lot
  • Free shuttle service from Klais train station to the hotel daily 5am – midnight.
  • Free meals at the staff restaurant
  • Approved external training/upskilling is subsidized with € 1500/year, subject to prior agreement
  • Christmas bonus of 1/2 a month’s salary or individual bonus agreements
  • Free admission to cultural events featuring the great artists of our time
  • Free use of the indoor spa with lap pool, gym, and saunas after 6pm
  • Free participation in yoga classes for employees

Location & Surroundings

Schloss Elmau is located 100 km south of Munich, 40 km north of Innsbruck, and 18 km south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Elmau Valley. It is a magical sanctuary high in the Bavarian Alps, between the Zugspitze Glacier and the Karwendel Mountains. The region offers extraordinary sports & recreational opportunities all year round.

Schloss Elmau is centrally located in Europe. You can drive to Munich in one hour, to Italy in two hours, to Venice or Milan in 4.5 hours, to Salzburg in 2.5 hours, to Innsbruck in 40 minutes, to Prague in 4 hours, and to Zurich in 3.5 hours. We offer free shuttle service between the hotel and the Klais train station from the first to the last shift. You can also reach Schloss Elmau by e-mountain bike from all the neighboring villages.
